Cinema di Seconda Mano #2

(Cinema di seconda mano / Second-Hand Cinema) This is the second edition of a film festival dedicated to “archive-based films” which has been curated and conceived by L’Ambulante and which is held from the 23rd of October 2019 till the 29th of January 2020, at the space Controra, in Piazza G.M. Dettori 3, in Cagliari.

What is the Second-Hand Cinema?

By second-hand cinema, we mean a type of research and experimental cinema, based on the recycling of “archive” images which investigate, interpret, modify, reconstruct and give a new meaning to a series of pre-existing images, thus producing a new artwork endowed with a different sense.

Why talking about pre-existing images and not simply archive images?
An image, in itself, becomes archive the very moment after it has been stared at. Therefore, not the archive or the archive images, but rather the images as such are the starting point for an artwork construction. An archive is an images stock, a catalogue, organized accordingly to some specific categories. There are official archives and “minor” archives, archives for family and personal memories, as well as archives connected to a territory, to an historical period or to a specific social condition and so on.

Quoting Jean-Luc Godard in one of the films of the festival: “The cinema lies”. The image is not the “ultimate truth”. Therefore, the archive image is no longer a construction of an immutable memory, it can’t be considered as a document. Through these movies, we want to leave the combination of history-memory inspired by the archive, we want to look to the image as an image capable to build not “the” history but one or some of the thousand possible histories in a perpetual concatenation between present and past time, between film action and interpretation, between research, translation, and re-shaping.

When we chose the films for the festival, we were thus guided by this consideration about time and temporality in cinema, aimed at building a new kind of temporality – the present time of the vision. 13 movies, all very different from each other, leading us into a path that is meditation about time, history, and memory all together; a reflection on cinema, but also and above all on the images that bombard our present time.

Cinema di Seconda Mano #3

The “Second-Hand Cinema” festival is a viewing circuit investigating a type of research cinema, based on the recycling of “archive images”. When you refer to this sort of cinema, you will automatically think of the film roll. What if the video which is re-used to produce a new artwork was the result of a digital process? What if PIXELS replaced the film rolls?
Regardless of the origins of the images, “Second-Hand Cinema” focuses on the handling of sounds, images, and imaginaries, and on their re-use. That’s what all cinema is, a huge archive, an immense tank. However, in a digital era where everything is immediately accessible, everything is also immediately archived/discarded.
In this third edition of “Second-Hand Cinema”, we will, through a series of meetings and film screenings, explore new worlds and workshops, art factories, and meet cinema makers who take what has been discarded and transforme it into living material.
